The Oyster House is truly a one-off holiday let with fantastic features. Now a gorgeous riverside home, it was formerly a building where locally caught oysters were shucked and processed for sale.
The house’s timber cladding and bright turquoise doors are a hint of what you find inside – a striking open-plan space filled with light, lively colours and joyous design touches. The open-plan living, dining and kitchen spaces are wrapped in a bright white, while pops of primary colour in the chairs and kitchen splashback add a sense of fun.
Wide picture windows and French doors opening to a Juliet balcony provide jaw-dropping views along the estuary, and across the rolling banks where the twin villages of Newton and Noss unfold.
For summer dining, the stunning roof terrace offers panoramic views and is fully equipped with seating and a dining table.
Upstairs, the vibrant contemporary design continues. In the master bedroom, a striking lantern roof with wraparound window panels makes an architectural statement. And the room’s private terrace garden, accessible through French doors, is a special touch.

Location
The Oyster House is in an outstanding waterside spot in the idyllic Devon village of Newton Ferrers. The property is directly opposite a slipway onto Newton Creek. It’s also in the thick of village life, with The Dolphin Inn – a traditional pub serving lovely meals – and local shops a convenient strolling distance from the front door.
The twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo on the opposite side of the creek – which you can reach by ferry or walk to at low tide – are abundant in beauty and charm. With their rolling banks, river and winding lanes, the villages offer a delightful taste of laid-back Devon living.
There are lovely walks to enjoy around the village estuary and out to the coast, where stunning dramatic cliffs and sea views await. The tidal estuary is popular for swimming, paddleboarding or kayaking. As well as the pub along the lane, there are a further two charming pubs serving delicious meals, tea and coffee, cake and ice-cream, plus a good selection of wines and local beers.
Getting there
By car
From the A38, take the exit for Smithaleigh/Yealmpton and when you arrive in Yealmpton, turn left into Torr Hill, driving on to Ford Road and along the B3186 and continue onto Parsonage Road, then onto Yealm Road. Turn left down onto Newton Hill then right onto Riverside Road West. The Oyster House is located a little way along on the right – look for its timber classing and blue doors.
By train
There are frequent rail services to Plymouth city centre. From here, there is a bus service to Newton Ferrers. If the timings aren’t convenient, it may be easier to take a taxi for the remaining half-hour journey to your holiday let.
By coach
Numerous coach services arrive at Plymouth station, located in the centre of the city. From here, a local bus service is available to Newton Ferrers – or you may find it more convenient to take a taxi service for the remaining half-hour drive to your holiday house.
