Holidays in Noss Mayo

What makes Noss Mayo a great place to stay? If you’ve been before, you’ll already know. But if it’s a new destination to you, here’s a short overview of what to expect.

Noss Mayo isn’t your typical Westcountry holiday spot. While many destinations near the coast are teeming with people in the warmer months, the pace of life is somewhat gentler here. But sleepy and mundane it certainly is not. Noss Mayo is a thriving community prized by water lovers, walkers and anyone who likes to watch the world go by in a serene setting, surrounded by natural beauty.

Life in Noss (as we locals call it) is centred around the estuary of the River Yealm, which separates the village from its larger neighbour, Newton Ferrers. The river is a magnet for those who engage in water-based pursuits, from yachting to paddleboarding. And on both sides of the estuary, you’ll be treated to a fine selection of characterful pubs. On the Noss side, The Ship Inn stands out for its relaxed outdoor seating beside the creek and its delicious food offerings – which include fresh local fish, seafood and meat dishes served with a creative gastro twist – are a cut above standard pub grub fare.

Wonderful walks

One of the nicest things to do in Noss is quite simply to enjoy a leisurely wander. The village takes on a different character from alternative vantage points. Strolling around the lanes and stepping out into the estuary at low tide provides an endless variety of viewpoints, with pretty houses, old stone churches and rolling landscapes creating picture-perfect moments.

And Noss Mayo begs you to take on a longer ramble. Step a little out of the village and you’ll be on the South West Coast Path. Discover the secluded sand-and-pebble Cellar Beach, and step around the cliffy southern reaches of the land, with spectacular panoramic views over the English Channel. The walks around Noss Mayo can also be merged into a satisfying circular journey, linking up with the Revelstoke Drive, a route along a Victorian carriage track, before returning to Noss Mayo. As well as providing wonderful scenery and walks right on your doorstep, a holiday in Noss Mayo positions you perfectly for great days out in Devon and Cornwall. Wide sandy beaches, such as Stoke and Mothecombe, are just a short drive away, with plenty more gorgeous coastline to discover pretty much wherever you go in this part of the world.

Devon and Cornwall on your doorstep

And seemingly a world away (although, actually only around 10 miles away by road), there’s the maritime city of Plymouth to explore. A mix of modern and ancient, Devon’s largest city has an abundance of attractions to offer, from a large and varied shopping centre, to diverse pubs and restaurants, to a rich cultural scene with numerous theatres, cinemas, museums and galleries.

And throughout Devon and Cornwall (only a few miles to your west) there are stunning attractions, natural beauty and heritage to discover. From the world-famous Eden Project to Cornwall’s iconic tin mines to the rugged wilderness of Dartmoor, fascination and adventure are only a short journey away from Noss Mayo.
